MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: In the middle of the 19th Century, Amur (Siberian) tigers roamed the forests of northeast Asia, hunting on both sides of the Amur River (Heilong Jiang). A hundred years later, they were on the edge of extinction, subject to overhunting and habitat loss. Then, unexpectedly, tigers began to bounce back, first in Russia and then in China. Jonathan C. Slaght followed the scientists and conservationists who work in the forests of northeast Asia, examining how field research and changing political circumstances have shaped efforts to protect the species. His talk looks at how people's views on tigers have changed from animals to be feared and hunted to a species in need of serious protection.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Jonathan C. Slaght is a scientist with the New York City-based Wildlife Conservation Society, with over twenty years of experience working to protect endangered species in northeast Asia. He is the author of the award-winning Owls of the Eastern Ice. His latest book, Tigers Between Empires was declared one of the best books of 2025 by The Telegraph, Minnesota Star Tribune, and Scientific American, and will be published in Chinese in 2027. He lives in the United States but travels frequently to China for work.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR: Terry Townshend is a naturalist with wide-ranging interests and connections at all levels of China's environmental programmes and issues, including conservation of wild cats. Within RASBJ he is perhaps best known as the charismatic leader of our two annual birding excursions.
