WHAT: RASBJ film screening of "The Re-education of Ji Zhihao" followed by QA with director Tian Macleod Ji (online)

WHEN: Jan. 12, 2022 Wednesday from 8:00 – 9:00 PM Beijing time

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT:The Re-education of Ji Zhihao tells the story of youth re-education during the Cultural Revolution in China, focusing on a young student from Shanghai who was sent to the Siberian border for nine years of hard labour. Several decades later he returns with his British grandnephew -- Tian Macleod Ji who directed, shot and produced the film -- to revisit his past, treading old ground in search of memories. Building on the work of China's independent filmmakers in exploring subject matter that is often absent from mainstream cinema, this film explores one of the largest social experiments in human history through an intimate and personal lens. It premiered at the Oscar and BAFTA qualifying LA Shorts International Film Festival, and was shortlisted for an Inspiration Award at the Arts and Humanities Research Council's Research in Film Awards in 2021.

NOTE: A number of characters in the film speak in Chinese, accompanied by English subtitles. The film is 26 minutes long and will be screened via zoom starting 8:00 PM Beijing time Jan. 12. For higher-quality viewing, attendees may watch the documentary at their leisure before the event via this YouTube link: https://youtu.be/dQPoqZBiFdE and then join the online QA with the director beginning around 8:30 PM Beijing time, Jan. 12.
