Event Details
WHAT: An RASBJ online presentation, "Assisted Reproduction: history, ethics and controversies" by Dr. Peter Brinsden, moderated by Roberta Lipson.
WHEN: Wednesday April 6 2022 from 7:00-8:00 PM Beijing Time
MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: Dr. Peter Brinsden has seen Chinese society develop from unique perspectives. The fourth generation of his family to be born in China, now a retired consultant gynaecologist and specialist in fertility and assisted reproduction, he was part of a team focused on in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in its early years in UK, leading to the birth of Louise Brown, the world's first "test-tube baby" in 1978. Many "spin-off" technologies have developed from the basic and original IVF, and many controversies have arisen in the 40 years since Louise Brown's birth. In China, where assisted reproduction is illegal for single women, the topic has complex characteristics which Dr. Brinsden will discuss.
He will also briefly introduce himself with an outline of his family's 150-year history in China, including his own birth โ at the Peking Union Medical College โ in 1940.
