ABOUT THE EVENT: The Temple of the Earth or Ditan Park is considered one of the best parks reflecting the "temperament" of Beijing. In this guided walk, Tim will share insights into the ancient and modern history and design of Ditan Park, explaining its architecture, layout and significance during imperial times in accordance with Chinese cosmology, astrology and the seasons. In the section of the park dedicated to Chinese health and medicine, Tim will describe the evolution of Daoist theories of "yin and yang", the "five elements" and the "harmony" of Chinese philosophy for health and longevity. Tim will also highlight the often unnoticed design elements of all Beijing parks including ancient trees, colors, feng shui, and exercise zones -- and why Ditan Park has attracted the literati, taiji masters and regular Beijingers for decades.
