WHAT: Film screening of " Comrade Kim goes Flying", an award-winning romantic comedy set in North Korea, introduced by director Nicholas Bonner.


WHEN: January 8, 2022, Saturday 4:00-5:45 PM Beijing Standard Time. Doors open at 3:30. The introduction/screening starts at 4:00 and will end at 5:30. Then the director will answer attendees' questions for 15 minutes.

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: Comrade Kim Yong Mi is a North Korean coal miner. Her dream of becoming a trapeze artist is crushed by the arrogant trapeze star Pak Jang Phil who believes miners belong underground and not in the air. "Comrade Kim goes Flying" is North Korea's first "girl power" movie and the story of a girl reaching for her own dream and carving out her own future. The film is in Korean with English sub-titles and is one hour, 21 minutes in length. "Comrade Kim goes Flying" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (2012) and at the Busan International Film Festival; it became the first ever North Korean film to be shown to a public audience.

MORE ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: Nicholas Bonner, a UK citizen, first visited North Korea (DPRK) in 1993 and set up Koryo Tours & Studio, specialising in tourism and cultural projects in North Korea. He has been involved in several art and film projects , including the BBC documentary films "The Game of Their Lives", "A State of Mind", and "Crossing the Line". In 2018 Bonner was associate producer of the travel documentary "Michael Palin in North Korea".

    UK citizen Nicholas Bonner first visited North Korea (DPRK) in 1993 and set up Koryo Tours & Studio, specialising in tourism and cultural projects in North Korea. He was on the production team for the BBC documentary films "The Game of Their Lives", "A State of Mind" and "Crossing the Line". In 2018 Bonner associate produced the travel documentary "Michael Palin in North Korea".
    Amongst various art projects Bonner co-curated the DPRK inclusion for the APT 2010 (Brisbane Modern Art Gallery), and co-curated the North Korea content for the Korea pavilion at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale (Golden Lion winner). His books "Made in North Korea" on graphics and "Printed in North Korea" on the art of the linocut were published by Phaidon.
