MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: Join RASBJ Eats to sample distinguished dishes from Hunan, a southern province celebrated for its bold chilies, smoked and cured flavors, and richly layered sauces. This dinner will take place at Xiaoxiangfu's CBD location (潇湘府PLUS), a long‑established Beijing restaurant specializing in Hunan cuisine near Guomao. Scarlett Huang, a Hunan native and food enthusiast, will curate a menu where guests can look forward to regional specialties such as 剁椒鱼头 (fish head with chopped chilies), 辣椒炒肉 (stir‑fried pork with fresh chilies), 小炒黄牛肉 (stir‑fried yellow beef with chilies), 鲜笋炒腊肉 (stir‑fried cured pork with fresh bamboo shoots), 土匪猪肝 (stir‑fried pork liver with chilies, "bandit‑style"), and 酸辣鸡杂 (sour‑spicy stir‑fried chicken offal). Together, these and other dishes will highlight the interplay of cured meats, offal, fresh vegetables, and Hunan's characteristic sour‑spicy profile. These dishes offer a focused introduction to the heat, aroma, and depth that define Xiang cuisine (湘菜 Xiang cai).


This gathering continues the new RASBJ Eats quarterly series, dedicated to exploring China's diverse culinary traditions through themed dining experiences across Beijing.


DIETARY NOTES:

This event is open to all and warmly welcomes guests from every background; however, to preserve culinary authenticity, we are unable to accommodate menu changes for specific dietary requirements. We can ask the restaurant to provide an ingredient list for particular dishes on request.


SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING HUNAN CUISINE:

Hunan is renowned for its spicy cuisine, and many dishes will fall at different points on the Scoville scale, ranging from no‑spice and mild options to distinctly spicier dishes.

REFUND POLICY: Attendees will be refunded in full if the event is canceled or postponed by RASBJ. Registrants who cancel for their own reasons will not be refunded after 6:30 PM on April 24.

    Hunan Native and Food Enthusiast

    Born and raised in Huaihua, western Hunan, Scarlett Huang has lived in Beijing for twelve years. As a concert manager and dedicated food enthusiast, she travels widely, but always returns—culinarily and emotionally—to Hunan cuisine (Xiang cai).

    For Scarlett, traditional Xiang cai is pure, direct, and aromatic: it does not hide behind heavy sauces or sugar, but celebrates the natural force of chilies, smoke, and fermentation.

    Scarlett’s hometown, Huaihua, lies in western Hunan, an area known as the birthplace of hybrid rice and a region that also witnessed key episodes in China’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. This combination of agricultural innovation, historical memory, and bold local flavors shapes Scarlett’s understanding of Hunan food and its place in China’s broader culinary landscape.
