MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: In the early 2000s, the 798 Art District was an obsolete factory compound built during the Maoist years and designed in the Bauhaus style by East German architects. It was doomed to be demolished and replaced by modern skyscrapers. But a group of artists with international ties managed to save it from destruction; it escaped the notorious 拆 (chāi, meaning demolition). What at the time seemed like a crazy bet, has become the symbol of the effervescence of Chinese art. Looking back to the pivotal years that allowed the existence and sustainability of the 798 Art District, we will also look at the extraordinary turn that contemporary art has taken in China as well as its deep roots in Chinese society. The talk will be illustrated with rarely seen historical photos.
