WHAT: "On the Trail of Sir Aurel Stein (and his dog Dash)" by William Lindesay OBE

WHEN: Sunday, Dec. 17 from 2.30-4.00 PM. Doors open at 2.00 PM Beijing time NOTE: THIS IS AN AFTERNOON EVENT

WHERE: 2F, La Maison Lyonnaise, 44 Guanghua Lu (opposite the Brazilian Embassy)

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: William Lindesay, OBE recently returned from remote areas of Western China, visiting the famous caves near Dunhuang and remnants of the Han Dynasty frontier which was first explored, mapped and photographed by Sir Marc Aurel Stein (1862-1943). Stein was a Hungarian-born British archeologist, a Royal Asiatic Society personality, and an active player in the so-called "Great Game" between the Russian and British empires. In this year which marks the Bicentennial of the RAS in London, William will introduce Stein, the area in which he explored and the dogs named "Dash" (there were 7) who were his constant companions. Many of us have stayed with William to witness dawn on the Wild Wall near Beijing; some of us have been fortunate enough to travel with William to the far end of the Wild Wall in China's Wild West. While researching Stein's four Central Asian expeditions in this remote area, William became the owner of the dog collar awarded to 'Dash the Great' by his proud owner. If you're curious about the how, when, why (and maybe how much), more lies behind this story. Join us on Dec. 17 for an illustrated presentation with videos. William will bring copies of many of Stein's original books from his own collection — and some of his own books for purchase, for those of you who want to make a dent in your holiday shopping list!
