ABOUT THE EVENT: The documentary film "Valor and Memory" focuses on the "Flying Tigers'" of WWII, daring American airmen who travelled to China to help its people repel Japan's brutal invasion. Under the command of Gen. Claire Chennault, they were credited with downing an unusually high number of enemy aircraft. Moreover, their legendary courage -- and their unforgettable "shark-toothed" aircraft -- made the "Flying Tigers" an iconic symbol of the wartime alliance between China and America against the backdrop of a complex historical relationship. The film also mentions the "Chinese Tigers," Chinese pilots who earned their wings at American flight schools in places like Arizona and Texas, then returned home to defend their homeland, also the men who could be called "Chinese American Tigers," young men raised in American big-city "Chinatown" neighborhoods, sent by the U.S. Army to China for their language and cultural knowledge as well as their technical skills. After screening his one-hour film, director Bill Einreinhofer will discuss the "Flying Tigers" legacy with attendees. "Valor and Memory" is slated to begin airing on U.S. public television stations in November 2024.
