WHAT: "China, Cambodia, and the BRI" by Mary Kay Magistad, the Asia Society Center on US-China Relations; moderated by Dawn Wei Tan and followed by QA (online)

WHEN: Jan. 5, 2022 Wednesday 8:00-9:00 PM Beijing Standard time

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: Cambodia and China have a long and complex relationship, from ancient cultural, diplomatic and trade ties, through China's support of the Khmer Rouge, to Cambodia now being a reliable ally of China's in ASEAN, and a vital strategic part of China's Belt and Road Initiative in Southeast Asia. Journalist Mary Kay Magistad has covered both China and Cambodia for decades, based first in Bangkok, then in Beijing. In this talk, she'll explain why and how Cambodia now matters to China, and why Chinese support matters to Cambodia's leaders.

MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Mary Kay Magistad covered Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, 1988-95, first as a stringer for The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, NPR, and Canada's CBC, then as a NPR's Southeast Asia correspondent. She moved to Hong Kong, then Beijing, setting up NPR's first official Beijing bureau in 1996, and staying until 1999. She returned for PRI/BBC's The World, 2003-13, reporting in every province in China, most countries in Asia, and some in Africa and beyond, on – among other things – the impact of China's rise as a regional and global power. She has since done two critically acclaimed podcasts, Whose Century Is It?,and On China's New Silk Road, the latter reported in a dozen countries on five continents, looking at how China's Belt and Road Initiative, and its broader global ambition, are seen and felt around the world. Mary Kay is now associate director of Asia Society's Center on US-China Relations.

MORE ABOUT THE MODERATOR: Dawn Wei Tan has been the China bureau chief of The Straits Times since 2018. The Straits Times is Singapore's main English-language newspaper. Dawn has been a journalist for 20 years, and was previously based in London.
