ABOUT THE EVENT: Empire is one of history's most durable and disputed political forms. From Rome and the Han to the Mongols, Mughals, Qing, Russian and British, empires have organised trade, labour, law, and belief across vast distances, while also depending on conquest, hierarchy, and violence. To speak of empire 'past, present, and future' is therefore not simply to recall vanished realms but to ask how imperial legacies โ borders, racial categories, extractive economies, cultural hybridities, and memories of resistance โ continue to shape the modern world and the international order.
In this discussion, two of the world's most distinguished historians examine those continuities and ruptures. They will consider whether contemporary great-power rivalry, globalization, humanitarian intervention, and digital networks represent new forms of empire or departures from it; how colonised and colonising societies remember and contest imperial pasts; and whether empire has a future, or whether its logic is being reinvented in less formal guises. Drawing on different periods and historiographical traditions, they debate the uses and limits of 'empire' as a category for understanding power today.
