MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: Rebounding from three years of pandemic-era challenges, China's travel industry has undergone numerous changes. Many travel agencies simply folded. Others survived through new collaborations, new destinations and new ways to communicate with clientele. One of the survivors is WildChina, whose founder Zhang Mei (now residing in California) recently returned to China and has been exploring the evocative mountains of Pu'er in Yunnan. There one of her signature tours involves re-tracing ancient tea and horse caravan trails. To compensate for China's hiatus in physical travel due to COVID-related restrictions, Mei had branched out into social media and podcasts. Today she has a social media following of about one million. Among them, she discovered a brave new world of aspiring travelers -- keen to discuss their likes and dislikes, their hopes and fears. What did Mei learn about the future of travel -- and about China -- from her social media audience? Join RASBJ's small-group in-person dinner with Mei to find out!

WildChina Founder and Chairlady Zhang Mei is a native of Yunnan province in southwest China. She holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and worked for McKinsey & Company until she found her true passion in sustainable travel. Mei is an Aspen Institute China Fellow and currently serves as a member of Harvard Business School’s Alumni Board. While serving as a consultant to The Nature Conservancy, Mei witnessed the push and pull between economic development and conservation of both nature and culture in Yunnan.
She strongly believed that there was a for-profit solution to this – providing sophisticated interpretation of Chinese culture and nature through experiential travel. This revolutionary concept led to the creation of WildChina in 2000. She is author of "Travels through Dali with a Leg of Ham" and is currently a PhD student in Environmental Science at UC Berkeley.
