Event Details

WHAT: Author Leta Hong Fincher discusses her new 10th anniversary edition of "Leftover Women: The Resurgence of Gender Inequality in China" in an online RASBJ event

WHEN: Wednesday, January 10, 8:00-9:00 PM Beijing Time

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: Chinese women hold fewer positions of official power today than ten years ago, when author Leta Hong Fincher wrote her landmark book "Leftover Women", shining a light on the resurgence of gender inequality in 21st-century China and exploring structural discrimination against women in China's economy, politics and development. The book has now been updated and overhauled, with a new preface exploring developments during the past decade, including China's recent "three child policy", the growth in online feminist and LGBTQ activism, and the government's reaction to dissent. "Leftover Women: The Resurgence of Gender Inequality in China, 10th Anniversary Edition" underscores how women in China continue to experience a dramatic rolling back of rights and gains in an increasingly patriarchal political climate.

MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Leta Hong Fincher has written for the New York Times, Washington Post, The Guardian, Ms Magazine, and BBC among others. She is currently Research Associate at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University. She is the author of Leftover Women (Zed, 2014) and Betraying Big Brother (2018).
