WHEN: Thursday April 14, 2022 from 7:00-8:00 PM Beijing Time

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: Isabel Crook has had extraordinary experiences in China. In 1915, she was born in Chengdu, Sichuan to Canadian missionaries involved in education; she spent childhood summers in Bailuding, Sichuan. After receiving a master's degree from the University of Toronto, she returned to China in 1939 and began anthropological fieldwork on Sichuan ethnic minorities. She married David Crook in 1942; they researched communist land reform efforts in Hebei in 1947, and published two books on the topic. In 1948, Chinese authorities invited them to help establish and teach at a foreign affairs school which was the forerunner of today's Beijing Foreign Studies University. Inspired by Isabel Crook's unique story, filmmaker Fu Han created "Isabel Crook: Childhood Memories of Bailuding" to celebrate Isabel's 103rd birthday. The 25-minute film screening will be followed by a conversation with Fu Han and members of the Crook family, plus QA. The event will be moderated by Melinda Liu.
