WHAT: "Painting the Pure Mind" โ€” a RASBJ in-person event featuring Peking University Professor Michael Cavayero, who will explain and illustrate how his experience with Chinese art, especially Buddhist traditions, has shaped his painting. Our host Nancy Yang will also introduce the venue, Chongli Residence."

WHERE: Chongli Residence, ๅด‡็คผไฝๅฎ…, on Dongsi 6 Alley, near Zhangzizhong Lu, DongCheng (ไปŽๅผ ่‡ชๅฟ ่ทฏๅœฐ้“็ซ™ๅพ€ๅ—่ตฐ10ๅˆ†้’Ÿๅฐฑๅˆฐ๏ผ‰Participants will receive detailed instructions on how to reach the venue in the run-up to the event.



ABOUT THE EVENT: Michael Cavayero, an American artist, scholar, and professor in the School of Arts at Peking University, will trace his path from an early fascination with the origins of "Chan painting" to over a decade of research and training in traditional landscape painting at the prestigious China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China. He will examine how his engagement with Chinese art, particularly Buddhist traditions, has informed the development of his painting practice.



ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Michael Cavayero is an assistant professor in the School of Arts at Peking University and a cross-appointed research professor at Peking University's Research Center for Aesthetics and Aesthetic Education. An accomplished painter, his work has been exhibited in museums and private collections since the early 2000s.



ABOUT THE VENUE: Chongli Residence is one of China's largest preserved courtyards, at over 10,000m2. Built in the reign of Guangxu, it is a National Key Cultural Relic, open only to residents and their guests. Nancy Yang, a resident , is our host for this event and will give an introduction to the residence.



ABOUT THE MODERATOR: Alan Babington-Smith, President of RASBJ, will introduce the speakers and moderate the event

    Assistant Professor at Peking University

    Michael Cavayero is an Assistant Professor in the School of Arts at Peking University and a cross-appointed Research Professor at Peking University’s Research Center for Aesthetics and Aesthetic Education. He is the recipient of the 2023 UNESCO Silk Roads Youth Research Grant, a Getty Foundation scholarship (2019), and a Freeman-Asia Fulbright award (2009/10), among other honors. He previously served as a Boya (International Talent Program) Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of South Asian Studies and the Research Center for Buddhist Texts and Art at Peking University. Michael’s research focuses on the dissemination and Sinicization of Buddhism in medieval China, with particular attention to early Chinese painting and art theory. He holds a BA from New York University, Steinhardt, and completed his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees at the China Academy of Art (Chinese National Academy of Art). His research and translations have been widely published in leading peer-reviewed journals in English and Chinese. An accomplished painter, his work has been exhibited in museums and private collections since the early 2000s.

    Alan Babington-Smith is founder of the Royal Asiatic Society Beijing (RASBJ), and has lived and worked as a banker in the UK, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Poland and the Baltics. He has called China his home since 2000. His great-uncle commanded the WWII “Dambusters” in Europe and his aunt Constance Babington-Smith was a pioneer in interpreting WWII aerial photography in the UK and the USA. Alan has published the story of British missionary Dr. Stanley Babington, who built the Enze Medical Bureau in Linhai, where the Doolittle Raiders received life-saving medical treatment.
