WHAT: An in-person conversation with artist, traveler, and social entrepreneur Kristel Ouwehand, founder of Snowland Art, the Tibetan Artists' Development Company, a small family-style fine art and handicrafts training school based in Xiahe, Gansu since 2010. The talk will be moderated by RASBJ Council Member Jeremiah Jenne. Some of the students from Snowland will also be on hand to show their art and that of their classmates. Select pieces and holiday merchandise produced by the students will also be available for purchase at the event.

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: Kristel Ouwehand, also known by her local name, Tenzin Dolma, is a Canadian who embarked on an extensive journey in 1992 at age 17. She traveled across Central America, Europe, parts of the Middle East, and the east coast of Africa before settling in India. She stayed in India for 11 years, mastering the traditional art of thangka painting. She also learned to craft butter sculptures and sand mandalas, contributed as one of 30 artists painting a new prayer hall, and even organized and translated for a year-long fundraising arts tour in North America from 2005-2006. In 2007, Kristel relocated to China, initially living in Sichuan until the earthquake in 2008, and then in Qinghai. In 2010, a pivotal moment occurred when a monk approached her, seeking art lessons. In the summer of 2014, she settled in Labrang (Xiahe), Gansu, where Snowland continues to operate today.


Snowland students will also be in attendance, showing their art and that of their classmates. They will also have a table of art and merchandise for sale, just in time for the holiday season!


HOW MUCH: Admission is RMB 200 for members of RASBJ and partner RAS branches and RMB 300 for non-members. The price includes one welcome drink plus light nibbles.

After your successful registration, you will receive a confirmation email. If you seem not to have received it, please check your spam folder. We appreciate your registering by the deadline of noon, Monday, November 21.


REFUND POLICY: Attendees will be fully refunded if RASBJ cancels this event. Registrations for those who have yet to pay by November 21 at noon will be canceled. After noon on November 21, registrants who cannot attend will not receive a refund.

    Kristel Ouwehand, also known by her local name, Tenzin Dolma, is a Canadian who embarked on an extensive journey in 1992 at 17. She traveled across Central America, Europe, parts of the Middle East, and the East coast of Africa before settling in India in 1996. The intricate tales and logistics of her travels could fill a book. After numerous adventures and invaluable life lessons, she found herself in India, intending to explore for six months before journeying overland to Indonesia. Unexpected events led her to Lhasa before returning to India. She stayed in India for 11 years, mastering the traditional art of thangka painting. Kristel's talents are manifold; she learned to craft butter sculptures and sand mandalas, contributed as one of 30 artists painting a new prayer hall, and even organized and translated for a year-long fundraising arts tour in North America from 2005-2006. In 2007, Kristel relocated to China, initially living in Sichuan until an earthquake in 2008. She then shifted to Qinghai and took up an editorial role in an NGO. In 2010, a pivotal moment occurred when a monk approached her, seeking art lessons. As years passed, more students joined, leading to the establishment of an entrance exam in 2012. In the summer of 2014, she settled in Labrang (Xiahe), Gansu, where Snowland continues to operate today.

    Dr. Jeremiah Jenne is a writer and historian based in Beijing since 2002. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, and taught Late Imperial and Modern Chinese History for over 15 years while also leading educational and research trips to every part of China. His essays and articles have appeared in "The Economist", "South China Morning Post", and numerous other publications. Jeremiah is the proprietor of Beijing by Foot, a division of The Hutong, which organizes historic walking tours of Beijing's most famous sites and less-traveled byways and leads workshops on history, culture, and cultural adaptation for students, embassies, companies, and community groups. Along with David Moser, Jeremiah is also the co-host of the podcast "Barbarians at the Gate."
