Event Details

RASBJ invites all members to commemorate the global impact of the unique and historic reign of Queen Elizabeth II, by viewing her Funeral streamed live onto a large screen in Beijing.

While her achievements in the U.K. and worldwide are generally well-known and acknowledged, Queen Elizabeth II also made history in China. Her six-day state visit to China in 1986 was the first by a British monarch. She met China's top leaders, including Deng Xiaoping, at a time when China and Britain were setting the stage for Hong Kong's 1997 reversion to Beijing's sovereignty. Even far from home, her famous sense of humour was undimmed. Regarding the first British emissary to China -- who was lost at sea, along with Queen Elizabeth I's letter to the Chinese emperor Wan Li -- Queen Elizabeth II joked at the state banquet in Beijing: "Fortunately postal services have improved since 1602". The photograph of her on this notice was taken at that banquet.
